Coimbatore , May 25

THE 100-year-old Mumbai-based logistics major, Jeena and Company, has launched its operations here with a view to taking advantage of the emerging market potential opening up in Coimbatore business hub for value-added logistic support services.

The company opened its own office at Peelamedu close to the civil airport on Monday and the Coimbatore branch, the fourth one to be opened in Tamil Nadu, would offer both conventional customs and freight forwarding, sea/air cargo consolidation and new generation value-added logistic support services, according to Mr Homi A. Katgara, member of the Katgara family and partner of the company.

The Katgara family, promoters of the company, consolidated its customs clearance and freight forwarding operations in India through the two world wars into its present status as a multi-disciplined domestic logistics operator at 25 locations with 700 employees. Among the services provided by the company include the pre-shipment quality inspection centres, warehousing and distribution and cargo tracking system.

`We have chosen to have a separate office in Coimbatore considering the fact that the city and its environs including the nearby Tirupur are to emerge as the logistics hub with both textile and engineering shipments from the region poised to grow multi-fold by next year when quota free global trade will be on', said Mr Homi Katgara.

"It is not only the export and import volume we look at from the region but also the volume of merchandise from garment factories in the region that would go catering to the domestic market over the next few years.

These are the strong pointers for us to open our operation,'' said Mr B.K. Anand, general manager of the company.

Jeena and Company has already been operating pre-shipment inspection centres in India on behalf of some of the leading global brands which include the Otto AGM, the german mail order catalogue house. Its inspection centres are located in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Tirupur.

It is also offering third party warehousing and distribution.
