CARD technique to detect cardiac illness

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , May 25

THE bad news is that more than 13.5 crore Indians are afflicted with some kind of cardiovascular ailment and that more and more people below 40 years are getting heart diseases.

The good news is that one can prevent heart attacks by detecting abnormalities, if any, at a very early stage using a technique developed by the Centre for Advanced Research and Development (CARD), the R&D wing of Bangalore-based Scalene Cybernetics Ltd.

The 3-Dimensional Cardiovascular Cartography (3DCCG) employs a technology used primarily in seismology, aerospace exploration and warfare.

"The non-invasive technique helps detect coronary heart disease at an early stage," Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar of CARD said.

Addressing a news conference here to mark the installation of 3DCC system at Safe Health here, he said the system provided complete and varied data on different parameters that would help detect cardiac problems.

Dr Vijay Kumar said there were 36 installations of 3DCCG in 11 countries. "The data will be useful in treating some other pulmonary problems and some cancers," he said.

"About 25-30 per cent of asymptomatic people have underlying coronary artery disease and the symptoms usually surface only after the disease has progressed to a considerable extent," Dr J. Kishore, a clinical cardiologist from Bhubaneshwar, said.

The test, which would take 20 minutes, is more useful than other non-invasive testing methods such as stress ECG and stress echo, Dr V.J. Sadhana, Director and Medical Consultant at Safe Health said.
