A DAY after the portfolio allocation stand-off in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government got resolved, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) nominee Mr S.S. Palanimanickam took charge as the Minister of State for Finance.
Mr Palanimanickam met the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, before taking charge. Mr Chidambaram, who escorted Mr Palanimanickam to the latter's office in North Block, told presspersons that he was "delighted" that Mr Palanimanickam had taken charge as MoS-Finance.
"He is a good friend and a 4-time Member of Parliament. He has been elected to Parliament from a nearby constituency of mine. We have in the past spent many hours discussing many issues. As MoS in the Finance Ministry, he would take a big load off my shoulders in the Ministry," Mr Chidambaram said here on Wednesday.
Soon after taking charge, Mr Palanimanickam told newspersons at his North Block office that the Finance Ministry would "speed up" all pending tax related cases. "It is the duty of the Ministry to speed up cases that are pending. If there are cases against Ms J. Jayalalithaa (Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu), it would also be pursued like any other case," Mr Palanimanickam said, when asked to comment on whether he intends to vigorously pursue tax cases, if any, against AIADMK supremo Ms J. Jayalalithaa.
On revenue collections, Mr Palanimanickam said that the collections were progressive last year and looked encouraging this year.
