Mangalore , May 26

THE Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management (JKSHIM) at Nitte in Udupi district is planning to formulate a model for self-employment programmes in rural areas.

In this regard, the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, has awarded a research project — `Rural self-employment programmes in India: An appraisal' — - to the institute.

The JKSHIM Director, Dr M.S. Moodithaya, told Business Line on Wednesday that the findings of the study would facilitate the formulation of a model for self-employment programmes. The model could be replicated in other parts of the country and the developing countries of the world.

He said that the study would examine the factors contributing to the success or failure of the self-employment initiatives under diverse socio-economic conditions.

It would analyse the role of various State agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in creating the conditions conducive for the success of initiatives at the grass roots level. The study would also explore the role of financial agencies and their involvement in funding the productive ventures.

The performance of 12 self-employment training institutes, which are sponsored by banks and NGOs in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, would be studied in detail.

The study sought to make an authentic assessment of the effectiveness of employment generation programmes in raising the rural households above the poverty line. It would be the first attempt in documenting the efforts of some nationalised banks and Grameen banks in generating employment in rural areas, he said.

Dr Moodithaya said that the former Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank, Dr N.K. Thingalaya, the Agricultural Economist of FAO, Dr N.S. Shetty, and himself would study various dimensions of rural self-employment in India.
