Thiruvananthapuram , May 26 SECOND-TIER cities such as Meerut, Rajkot, Pune, Lucknow and Mangalore have eclipsed the metros in terms of penetration of CDMA-based mobile Internet services on offer from Reliance Infocomm. Addressing faculty and students of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Kerala (IIITM-K) after inaugurating the Business Line Club on Tuesday, Dr Vinod Vasudevan, Head, CDMA Networks, Reliance Infocomm, said that the comparatively better throughput for lower investment in infrastructure had provided CDMA with an edge over both GSM and GPRS for streaming mobile Internet. Dr Vasudevan heads the Wireless Data Group at Reliance Infocomm, CDMA Networks. He is responsible for the various aspects of packet data technology and services. Lower costs and good security features have enabled CDMA technology become the preferred option for rollout of services such as ATMs, lottery terminals and Points of Access associated with retail vends. Dr Vasudevan also mentioned about the increasing popularity of the Reliance RWorld. A key feature of the broadband services of the company, RWorld is based on Java, and has its server located in Mumbai. The company intended to offer MMS, Push-to-Talk and a two-MBPS broadband connection over any Reliance handset in future. Among those who spoke were Dr K.R. Srivathsan, Director, and Dr R. Bhaskaran, Director (Administration), IIITM-K. The institute was started in 2000 in Technopark and is the pioneer institute of its kind in the State. It conducts a Post Graduate course in Information Technology and Management (PGDIT). Major R&D areas are in the fields of E-Learning, E-Governance, Agriculture and Tele-health. In the last four years, IIITM-K has been able to achieve cent per cent placement for passing students. The institute hosts the Karshaka Information Systems Services And Networking (KISSAN), an innovative project supported by the Department of Agriculture and the Government of Kerala, www.kissankerala.net, an exclusive interactive portal for the agricultural sector, www.tvmcitypolice.org, the first interactive portal of the Thiruvananthapuram City Police and www.edugrid.ac.in, a network that links professional education institutions to give quality education to all. The business incubation centre at the institute has seen the launch of Tranversal E Networks (TEN), a leading software services company operating out of Technopark.
