Bengal exploring scope for more trade via Nathula, Fulbari

The Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority has taken up a number of projects such as the third bridge over Mahananda river and a truck terminal at Fulbari and Matigara.

Kolkata , May 26

THE West Bengal Government is gearing up to take advantage of emerging opportunities from two international land trade routes — Nathula and Fulbari.

Mr Ashok Bhattacharya, State Urban Development Minister, said here on Wednesday at a meeting organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry that a broad infrastructure development programme was underway in and around the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri area in north Bengal for promoting trade and commerce.

He hoped that Indo-China and Indo-Bangladesh trade flows would increase manifold in the coming years through Nathula and a proposed land trade point at Fulbari.

Trade protocols for export of fresh fruits and vegetables through Nathula to southern China was already through, he said. "Other trade details are being worked out by the two countries," he added.

To meet the increase in trading activity through land ports, Siliguri is being prepared as a transhipment hub, he said.

The Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority has taken up a number of projects such as the third bridge over Mahananda river, truck terminal at Fulbari and Matigara, a by-pass toll road linking Fulbari and Ghoshpukur, residential and commercial complexes.

The West Bengal Government was pressing the Centre for upgrading the Bagdogra airport to be able to handle international traffic, he mentioned.

The NHPC lower Teesta projects at Rambi and Kalijhora would produce 500 MW of additional power for north Bengal in the near future.

All these will substantially improve potential for manufacturing, services, trade and investments in the area, he commented.
