Shipping Industry & Economy - Trade & Labour Unions CII calls for meeting to resolve Chennai terminal strike Our Bureau
Chennai , May 26 THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has called for a quick settlement to the strike at the Chennai Container Terminal (CCTL). According to a press a release, the CII (Southern Region), said the deadlock between the workers and the management of the container terminal would affect the trade and the reputation of the port. The terminal handles about 1,400 twentyfoot equivalent units (TEU) of containers a day consisting of garments, food products, chemicals and auto components. Experience has shown that labour issues result in traders being saddled with congestion surcharge. The CII says that trade should not suffer for this reason. It has urged the management and workers' union to resolve the issue immediately. Mr M. Raman, currently the Chairman of the Chennai Port Trust, has called for separate meetings with senior officials of CCTL. But there is little that the Chennai Port Trust can do since this is a dispute concerning CCTL and its workers. Unless and otherwise, there is violation of the concession agreement, the Chennai Port Trust cannot intervene in the dispute, according to sources. However, Thursday's meeting with the CCTL management will highlight the impact on port users and convince the officials to take measures to restore normal functioning at the terminal. A number of manufacturers, especially automobile companies like Ford India and Hyundai Motor India depend on import of components for manufacturing cars at their plants near Chennai.
