THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is taking several measures to protect the State's biodiversity, said Mr G. Karthikeyan, Minister for Culture and Food.
He made this observation while inaugurating a three-day seminar on `Microbial diversity: A source of innovation in biotechnology' organised by the city-based Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI). Measures being implemented by the Government include the establishment of a `biodiversity board' and the creation of a Panchayat-level biodiversity database, he added.
The Minister also released a publication on `Microbial diversity: An Indian perspective', while Mr C.P. John, Member, Kerala Planning Board, released a `fungal database' prepared by TBGRI. Mr V. Ramachandran, Vice-Chairman, Kerala Planning Board, was also present. The workshop, which will end on May 29, will examine the role played by microbes in various areas, including food technology and the environment.
