Handloom Handloom silk sari production hit in Thanjavur dist Our Correspondent
Madurai, May 27 HANDLOOM production of silk saris in Thanjavur district is in disarray. According to sources, about 8,000 looms were functioning and 20,000 workers were dependent on the sector. Fluctuation in the cost of raw materials and stiff competition from power loom sector have badly affected the handloom industry. As a result, weavers in the producing centres in the district such as Kumbakonam, Thirubhuvanam and Thanjavur are hard put to maintain themselves. They have been largely engaged in the production of six yard saris, it is said According to Mr K. Prem of the Handloom Manufacturers' Association, loss of purchasing power and drought conditions have affected the sales badly. Prices of handloom silk saris have remained static and even wages could not be revised. Many weaving societies have become defunct. According Mr B.R. Gopi, a producer, high cost of silk yarn and zari have severely affected the fortunes of the industry, apart from the competition from the powerloom industry. Lack of demand for traditional saris has further compounded the situation. While change in technology is a means to survive and sustain, it should not be at the cost of workers, they feel.
