Ryots' suicides under scrutiny in AP

Hyderabad , May 27

FACED with the crisis of unabated suicides by farmers, the State Government on Thursday announced yet another step to stem the tide.

The Government has set up a control room at the Secretariat here, under the charge of the Principal Secretary, Revenue, Mr A.K. Goel, an official release said.

He will supervise and monitor all information received from the district help lines, which have been pressed into service, about the farmers' suicides in the State. The information collected would be submitted to the Chief Minister, who is closely monitoring the situation.

A detailed case-wise study would be conducted to analyse the situation, the release said. Nearly 54 deaths reportedly due to distress by farmers have come to light in the two weeks since the Congress (I) was voted to power in the State.

The State Government has announced a series of measures, including a relief package, help lines, counselling. A cabinet sub-committee has been constituted to look into the entire issue of suicides by farmers, which was a major electoral issue as well.
