Personal Products Bengal set to challenge southern dominance in synthetic nets Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 28 THE dominance of the two southern States in mosquito net manufacture is set to be challenged with units coming up in West Bengal, the main centre of consumption. Sources said that the eastern region is one of the largest users of mosquito nets, but nearly 90 per cent of the regional demand is met by processors based in the southern region - mainly Karur in Tamil Nadu and in the suburbs of Bangalore. With Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) now getting a firm foothold of the polymer market in the country, efforts are on to make the eastern region a manufacturing hub for mosquito nets, sources said. While the total market for synthetic nets was about 12,000 tonnes per annum, the demand in the eastern region was 10,000 tonnes - of this 7,500 tonnes was utilised in mosquito net manufacturing. HPL sources said that since the last two years the company has made a concerted effort to develop this industry in West Bengal and the North-East. As a result, three units have come up in the State. These are located in Midnapore, Durgapur and Cooch Behar Three more units are slated to come up in Haldia and Siliguri by this year-end, sources said. While the units at Midnapore and Durgapur are already operational, the one at Cooch Behar was set to start production by next month creating a total capacity of 450 tonnes per annum. The total investment in these units is about Rs 8 crore. Sources said that each of these units could provide employment to about 35 persons.
