Haier expanding Indian operations

Kolkata , May 30

HAIER, the German-named Chinese multinational white goods company, is spreading its wings wider in India.

Mr T.K. Banerjee, President and CEO of Haier Appliances (India), told Business Line here that after consolidating its position in the northern region, it had made its presence in the eastern market and would hit the western and southern regions next month.

The $9.7-billion global group has spread out its long list of premium models in items such as fridge, washing machine, air conditioners, TV, microwave oven, dish washer, dryer and DVD for the local market.

"During the current fiscal, mobile handsets - both CDMA and GSM - will also be launched for the Indian market. Most of the products are imported from China, where the company has six plants. Two models of ACs are manufactured here at UCPPL, a joint venture between Voltas and Fedders Lloyd plant. We are planning to assemble TV sets locally also. The arrangements for getting the assembling done from some local players are being made," Mr Banerjee informed.

According to him, response to Haier products in the northern region, including Gujarat, has been good. "We expect to clock a total turnover of Rs 300 crore in the first year of operation in India," Mr Banerjee added.
