Coir Coir Board aims at Rs 1,000-cr exports Our Bureau
Kochi , May 30 AS part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2004 the Coir Board is preparing a vision document for the development of the coir sector aimed at raising the exports of coir and coir products to Rs 1,000 crore by 2008-09. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr C. Chandran, Chairman, Coir Board, said already a comprehensive report covering a blue print of action plan for growth in the coir sector was identified in the Millennium Development Mission Document (MDMD) was presented to the Board of Directors. The MDMD, he said, had identified major growth potential areas to strengthen the coir sector, such as to provide a quantum jump in the application of fibre utilisation from the present level of 37 per cent to 50 - 60 per cent during the next five years. He aslo said that the focus was on to enhance the domestic and international market performance by three times and increase export performance by 25 per cent each year. The major thrust areas would cover de-centralised husk collection centres while integrated development strategy would give special emphasis to expanding and strengthening of small units. Among them are fibre extraction units, pith processing including pith blocks and composting units, yarn spinning, coir mattress, coir composite, flood blankets units etc. The MDMD, he said, also provided for growth in employment in the coir sector to be doubled from the present five lakh to 10 lakh in the next five years. Besides, it would provide for the value of products in all the coir producing states to be enhance to over Rs 25,000 crore in the next five years. It had also identified coir sector development as a "Coir Mission Development Programme" by the Planning Commission on the lines of Bamboo Mission and Jute Mission with increased central financial support, he added.
