Unlikely delicacy

Tapioca being loaded in to a mini-lorry in Kochi. Once a staple food of Keralites, tapioca has acquired the status of a delicacy following substantial drop in production as farmers have shifted to other cash crops such as rubber. Its production, which was 26.3 lakh tonnes in 1998-99, has dropped to around two lakh tonnes at present. Tapioca production in the 1950s and '60s was said to be over 1 crore tonnes a year.
