Members of the Heart Care Foundation of India cremate `Mr Tobacco' as part of their anti-tobacco campaign in the Capital on Sunday. Ramesh Sharma
New Delhi , May 30 THE `World No Tobacco Day' on May 31 is of special significance to the Health Ministry. It will be a month since the tobacco legislation came into effect. While officials in the Health Ministry are happy that the large hoardings dotting the skylines in the metros have come down and kiosks selling cigarette and tobacco products have started carrying signage against selling to minors, the real challenge is to ensure that consumption comes down. "We are trying to get corporates to enrol into the movement as it is important to start at the workplace. We want them to create special no-smoking zones at offices and also educate their employees about the hazards of consuming tobacco products," said a senior Health Ministry official. While some of the public sector enterprises such as Indian Oil Corporation have already started public awareness campaigns, in the private sector corporates who are members of the Confederation of Indian Industry have decided to take up the anti-tobacco cause proactively. The Health Ministry, on its part, has allocated Rs 6 crore to fight tobacco and cancer. "We will start a mass media campaign to increase awareness," said the official.
