New Delhi , May 31

GERMAN luxury carmaker Audi is set to commence operations in India by setting up a dealer network.

The company, calling its entry into India "its most significant strategic move since China", today said that it has plans to sell about 1,000 vehicles over the next five years.

The company has concluded two dealership agreements in Mumbai and Delhi and sales are likely to commence from July.

``We will take up a sporty position and watch carefully the way the market develops. There is still a lot more potential in this market, and we certainly intend to exploit it," Mr Joerg Hofmann, Managing Director (Asia- Pacific), Audi AG said.

The models to go on sale would be the Audi A6 3.0 (an executive class saloon), Audi TT Coupe 1.8 T (sports car) as well as the A8L 3.0 and all-road Quattro 2.5 TDI.

Under a three-pronged strategy for India, Audi, in a statement said it would build awareness about the brand and establish efficient infrastructure with an experienced dealer network.

The company said it would strive to implement the highest standards of sales and after-sales service. The company would begin by appointing dealers offering the full range of sales, after-sales and part services in Mumbai and Delhi, followed by additional service centres at other locations.
