Telecommunications Hindustan Cables staff plea for merger with BSNL Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 31 THE employees of the state-owned ailing Hindustan Cables Ltd have made out a case for merger of the company with telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. In a memorandum to the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Hindustan Cables Ltd Employees Union said that since Hindustan Cables has no buyers as on date, its merger with BSNL may be considered for utilisation of its manpower for the manufacture of electronic and electrical components. Since the merger with BSNL can take some time, in order to provide work for the employees of Hindustan Cables , BSNL may be asked to place further orders with Hindustan Cables along with advance as was done earlier. The outstanding dues of the previous advances as also pending orders given to Hindustan Cables by BSNL may be kept in abeyance till the revival package was sanctioned by the BIFR, the hearing of which is likely to be held later this year. Hindustan Cables has been a leading manufacturer of telecom cables of various specifications having a manufacturing capacity of 120-lakh km and 40,000 fibre km of optical fibre cable and supplying to BSNL and MTNL. In addition, Hindustan Cables provides turnkey services to BSNL. Having reduced the staff strength from 6,790 to 3,300, Hindustan Cables had managed to be financially better off. However, the turn of events in the last two-three years has put further pressure on the company. If the company was made a captive producer for BSNL, it could have sustained supply of order and turn as a win-win situation for both, the Hindustan Cables Ltd employees union headed by its President, Mr J. Subba Rao, and others said.
