Agriculture Agri-Biz & Commodities - Water Storage level in major reservoirs up Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 31 WITH the onset of the monsoon, the 71 major reservoirs in the country have started filling up and the storage level stands at 13 per cent of their designed capacity, according to the Central Water Commission. As on May 28, the live storage was 114 per cent of last year's level and 78 per cent of the last 10 years' average. At the beginning of the monsoons, the 71 reservoirs held 11 per cent water. The storage position is better than the past ten years average in Tapi, Mahi, Rivers of Kutch and Mahanadi and over 80 per cent of the 10 years average in Narmada and west flowing rivers of the South. The basin-wise position was less than 80 per cent average of past 10 years in Ganga, Indus, Sabarmati, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery and neighbouring east flowing rivers according to the Central Water Commission data. "In order to derive the best possible benefits from the available water, the Central Water Commission is keeping in touch with the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation and providing information of the weekly storage position to the Crop Weather Watch Group for evolving suitable crop strategies.
