The Hindu Business Line : Resolve strike immediately, appeals CII

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (Southern region) has asked Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL) to resolve the strike at the terminal immediately. It has also urged that the congestion surcharge of $ 50 a box, proposed to be levied by shipping lines, to be recovered from CCTL and not the trade.

In a statement, CII (SR) said the congestion surcharge would further burden the industry, which was affected by the strike at the terminal. Also, when both imports and exports were reeling under hardening euro and dollar, additional costs, now required to be borne by industry, were unacceptable.

It said the strike, which was on from May 23, had resulted in the trade suffering delays in both inbound and outbound cargo, resulting in huge loss for exporters and importers. "If industry were to estimate the losses, it may run into thousands of crores of rupees. And medium term consequences would be that the main line operators may take time to re-establish credibility of this port," the statement said.
