18 lift irrigation schemes okayed in AP

THE Minister for Lift Irrigation, Mr M. Mareppa has okayed 18 lift irrigation schemes with an outlay of Rs 40 crore, financed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard).

The project is expected to cover about 6389.48 hectares in 9 districts, which include Adilabad, Guntur, Khammam, Krishna, Kurnool, Nizamabad, Prakasham, Vizianagaram and West Godavari. Of these Prakasham district gets the lion's share of five lift irrigation schemes, according to an official release. While Nabard will provide loan to the tune of Rs 32.45 crore, the share of the State Government is Rs 6.72 crore.

In the entire State, 231 schemes under the minor irrigation sector (with an assistance of Rs 402.21 crore from Nabard) have been initiated, targeting anirrigation potential of 77,937 hectares. Of these, 153 schemes have been completed creating an irrigation potential of 42,721 hectares. In the current financial year 2004-05, 50 schemes with a budget outlay of Rs 110 crore and an irrigation potential of 21,893 hectares have been taken up.
