Rice Industry & Economy - Economic Offences Trader held for role in `rice scam' Our Bureau
Mangalore , June 1 THE team of Corps of Detectives (CoD), headed by the DIG, Economic Offences, Dr P. Ravindranath, on Monday arrested Mahadevan, managing partner of SS Maritime, in connection with a "rice scam". The team recovered some related documents at his office in Urva Stores of Mangalore. The arrested has been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, First Class, and has been remanded in judicial custody. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr Ravindranath said that 3.42 lakh bags of rice, each weighing 50 kg, worth Rs 13.5 crore have been seized from various godowns till now. In all, 17,000 tonnes of rice has been seized. Rice was stored in Mangalore godowns to export it through New Mangalore Port. Dr Ravindranath said that some more arrests are likely in the coming days. It is said that some traders allegedly diverted rice, which was meant for targeted distribution system (TDS), for exports. Traders involved in the scam were buying it at Rs 7.60 a kg and selling to exporters at Rs 8.50 a kg. Traders procured a major quantity of rice in Hassan district, it is said. The CoD team revealed that the traders involved in the scam were selling rice to three Delhi-based companies. These companies were exporting rice to African countries. The IGP, Economic Offences, CoD, Mr Sushanth Mohapatra, was present at the press meet.
