Excise and Customs Online filing of excise returns from June 30 K.R. Srivats
New Delhi , June 2 COME June 30, manufacturers of excisable goods, export-oriented units and registered dealers can electronically file their monthly/quarterly excise returns. The facility of e-filing of excise returns would be available, for the present, only as an optional facility, a Finance Ministry official said. It does not bar in any way the manual filing of return by the central excise assesses and the registered dealers. "For the present, returns would be accepted both manually and electronically," the official said. A circular issued by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) said that it is the legal responsibility of assesses, who are required to file excise returns, to file their returns within the due date as prescribed in the law. Assesses who have opted to file their returns electronically but are unable to file their returns electronically due to any reason should file their returns manually within the due date. The CBEC has directed Commissioners to designate an officer in every Commissionerate for the purpose of attending queries on matters relating to e-filing of excise returns.
