Roadblocks to Indo-Bangla trade

Our Kolkata Bureau

COME June 26 and the flow of trade by land route between India and Bangladesh is going to be hit. The Federation of Truck Operators Association, West Bengal, has given the call for strike from that date to protest against what it calls, "illegal" detention of eight Indian trucks within the Bangladesh territory by the Bangladesh rifles.

It all happened more than a year ago. The trucks carrying jute seeds crossed the border near Ghojadanga and entered into the Bangladesh territory. BDR felt that it was a pure case of trespassing and detained the trucks. There have been several attempts in the past 14 months to get the vehicles freed but with little success. The matter went up to the court and despite the court order for the release of the vehicles, nothing happened.

The Association now only hopes that the new government at the Centre will do the needful. Meanwhile, the Federation of Indian Exporters' Organisation has expressed the view that the proposed strike, if materialises, will hit Bangladesh more than India.
