REPRESENTATIVES from the radio industry met the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, on Monday to discuss the problems faced by the industry.
Millennium Mumbai Broadcast's Win 94.6 went off air on April 29, while Radio Mid-Day West (India) Ltd is planning to stop broadcast of Go 92.5 at the end of this month due to huge losses.
Government sources said that the private FM radio companies were seeking a deferment of payment of the annual licence fee and wanted a switch to a revenue sharing arrangement.
The Government has not given any indication of deferment. However, the FM operators would have to pay up their licence fee dues, for a period of four months between April 29 and August 29, as per the decision of the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Authority (TDSAT).
The FM companies had to cough up over Rs 100 crore as licence fee dues for the year and according to TDSAT's ruling, the Government could get around Rs 33 crore as licence fees for four months.
Mr A.P Parigi, Managing Director, Entertainment Network India Ltd, told presspersons, "The meeting was a courtesy call. We are looking towards the second phase of FM privatisation."
The company claims that the radio operation is bleeding despite subsidisation by the other businesses.
