IHT issue: Govt to file caveats in High Courts

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 7

THE Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry will file caveats in the Andhra Pradesh High Court and the Delhi High Court in anticipation of a stay petition filed by Midram Publication Private Ltd, which prints the International Herald Tribune (IHT) in India.

Sources in the Ministry said that even as the caveats would be filed on Tuesday, the Government has started legal consultations on the issue. "We are trying to find out if violation of the syndication guidelines or the 1955 Cabinet resolution can be traced back to any legislation," said sources.

They felt that allowing IHT to continue printing from India could set a precedent for other foreign news and current affairs publications to follow suit.

The I&B Ministry had last week sent out letters to Midram Publication and IHT officials at Hong Kong asking them to immediately stop publication of the paper in India.
