Trade & Labour Unions Scrap World Bank policies, says CITU Our Bureau
Hyderabad , June 8 THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded that the World Bank policies, which proved to be detrimental to the interests of workers, be scraped forthwith. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr S. Veeraiah, General Secretary of CITU's AP State Committee, said thousands of workers lost jobs as a result of World Bank policies implemented by the erstwhile Governments at the State and Centre. "The previous Governments suppressed workers' movements with a iron hand," he said. "We are not opposed to reforms as such. We are for reforms if they help the workers," he said. He, however, regretted that the word was hijacked by the World Bank. "Our reforms and their reforms are not the same. Their reforms are meant to benefit multinational corporations," he said. Briefing about the resolutions taken during the two-day State Council meeting held here, he said a CITU delegation would meet the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, soon to discuss the problems being faced by the workers. "A large number of industries closed shop resulting in huge job losses. The Government should take steps to reopen those industries, while taking initiatives to develop small-scale sector," he said. He asked the Government to do away with Implementation Secretariat that was set up to privatise public sector undertakings and downsize Government staff. The CITU also called for a legislation to protect the interests of workers in the unorganised sector.
