Shipping New ship joins SCI fleet Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , June 9 THE gross tonnage of Indian merchant shipping has crossed 7 million after a long time and it is a creditworthy achievement, according to Mr G.S Sahni, Director-General, Shipping. He was speaking here on Wednesday aboard Desh Shanti, which arrived here on her maiden voyage from Zirku port for discharging crude to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. The vessel was built in Daewoo shipbuilding yard, Korea, and it was in conformity with the latest international standards on safety and security, he said. He was accompanied by Mr K. Ratna Kishore, Chairman of the Visakhapatnam port, and other senior officials of the Shipping Corporation of India. Mr Ratna Kishore expressed the hope that the ship would make maximum voyages to Vizag. Mr R.K. Mitra, Director of SCI, said that with this acquisition, the total number of ships owned by the national carrier had increased to 87 with a DWT capacity of 4.61 million tonnes.
