THE `Anusupa' Lake, located about 30 km from Cuttack in Orissa and for all practical purposes virtually dead, could well see good old days, fully revived and fresh water flowing. Hoping to make this real, is AWARE Group, a Non-Governmental Development Organisation (NGDO).
The Orissa Government has awarded a revival-cum-conservation project for the lake with an estimated expenditure of Rs 29 crore to the AWARE Group, according to its Founder Chairman, Mr P.K.S. Madhavan.
The lake spread over 1,300 hectares, is one-and-half-time bigger than the Hussainsagar lake in Hyderabad, and has been extensively silted over the years. About 40-50 different species of migratory birds, including some from Siberia would visit and add to the natural beauty of the lake, he told Business Line here.
About 29 villages in the neighbourhood are dependent on the lake, which is a natural water body created by the river Mahanadi. Once, revived, the fall out of the lake would provide employment to about a lakh people in the ring of villages surrounding it, Mr Madhavan said.
AWARE has been selected by the Orissa Government on two major counts its successful execution of watershed projects in Andhra Pradesh and also the long-term projects underway in four districts of the Orissa State, he added.
