Velugu shifts focus to rural youth welfare

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , June 9

VELUGU (Society for Eliminating Rural Poverty - SERP) has embarked on a project to channelise the full potential of the youth in the State. The project envisages the setting up of a network by roping in all youth associations working in rural areas.

At a later stage, the network would see the formation of model villages. There will be child labour-free, no-smoking and good sanitation villages.

"Notwithstanding several efforts to tap their potential, the youth remains to be a largely neglected lot," Mr Chinatatayya, State Project Manager (Youth) of SERP, told Business Line.

In order to turn their attention to local problems, Velugu has prepared a blue print that is being implemented across the State.

The whole idea is to equip the youth with tools that enable them to achieve self-development and take part in community development progra- mmes.

According to him, the youth formed a third of village human resources after women and farmers. "They need to play an important role in the development of the community, besides mustering resources to stand their own. Unfortunately there is no concrete effort to guide them properly," he said.

"There should be some effective pressure groups in the villages to exert pressure on society so as to do away with social evils. It is very difficult to effect change, unless there is a change in the mindset of people at grassroots," he felt.

"In the first phase, we have selected five mandals in each district to implement the project. Each mandal will have a specially trained youth observing local conditions in detail. They will come out with their observations," he said.

The pilot project will run for three years. "This will culminate into a network of all the village-level youth organisations," he said.

This network would act as a bridge between the Government and the local communities.
