Fish catch in DK, Udupi coast dwindles

MARINE fish catch dwindled by 11,968 tonnes in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi coast in the fishing season June 2003-May 2004 compared to the previous season.

Fish catch in Dakshina Kannada district during the period was 83,784 tonnes (worth Rs 199.54 crore) compared to 88,322 tonnes (Rs 203.81 crore).

In Udupi district, fish catch was 57,921 tonnes (Rs 107.51 crore) compared to 65,351 tonnes (Rs 118.84 crore).The Deputy Director of Fisheries, Mr Suresh Kumar Ullal, told Business Line that the decrease in fish catch was a "natural trend" and that there was steady fish catch during the entire season.

Mangalore and Malpe regions contributed significantly to the fish catch of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, respectively.

Of the three marine fishing regions in Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore region's share to the total fish catch was more during the financial year 2003-04.

During 2003-04, total catch in Mangalore region was 94,780 tonnes (Rs 230.42 crore). Fish varieties such as pink pearch (19,228 tonnes), oil sardine (10,080 tonnes) and squids and scuttle fish (9,151 tonnes) contributed significantly to the total catch in the district during the last fiscal.

Fishermen caught 6,983 tonnes of prawns worth Rs 63.51 crore in the last fiscal. Of this, the share of "karkadi prawns" was 2,396 tonnes and "red rings" 3,932 tonnes.
