Textiles Plea to form unified textile development body Our Bureau
Mangalore , June 11 THE Chairman of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) Ltd, Mr L.R. Ananth, has demanded that steps be taken to merge KHDC, Karnataka State Powerloom Development Corporation and Kaveri Handlooms to form "Karnataka Textile Development Corporation". Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said this would help in having better coordination between handloom and powerloom weavers. Merger could pave way for achieving better results in this sector. He said the State Government, however, has taken steps to strengthen KHDC. It has decided to convert government loan and interest thereupon, amounting Rs 28.65 crore into equity. It has also decided to provide matching margin money of Rs 20 crore towards the working capital spread over two years. The remaining Rs 20 crore is expected from the Centre. Mr Ananth said KHDC, which has initiated steps on operational restructuring, has set up Priyadarshini International to tap the export market. Retail market base will be widened and the products will be diversified, he said, adding that there is good demand for readymade shirts manufactured by the corporation. Mr Ananth urged the State Government to place orders for school uniforms under the "Vidya Vikas" scheme with KHDC. Stating that the Education Department is yet to place orders with KHDC for the supply of school uniforms, he said there is uncertainty whether the scheme will be implemented during the academic year or not. Discontinuation of "Vidya Vikas" scheme will affect the corporation, he said. KHDC is planning to reopen its project centre in Udupi. The unit was closed in 1998. Reopening of the centre will help weavers in the area, he added.
