EAN assisting pharma cos to adopt barcode

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 11

AFTER the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made the barcoding of human drugs and biological products mandatory, EAN India, a non-profit organisation, which administers these standards, said that it had started working closely with major Indian pharmaceutical companies. More than 400 Indian pharma and medical supplies exporters have adopted barcoding using EAN.UCC standards.

"The US is a major buyer of medicines and medical products. Indian exporters would need to quickly incorporate barcodes on their export supplies to meet the US FDA directive. A number of pharma exporters to CIS countries have already been using EAN barcodes based on country/buyer requirements," said Mr Ravi Mathur, CEO, EAN India.

Recently the USFDA, the body responsible for the control of medicines and food in the United States, announced that it would demand bar codes on all medicines for hospital use, in such a way that the hospitals can use readers to ensure that patients received their medicines correctly, thus increasing their safety.

In addition, the rule also requires the use of machine-readable information on container labels of blood and blood components intended for transfusion.

The FDA estimates a 50 per cent reduction in medication errors that would otherwise occur while administering drugs, even though some hospitals that currently have bar code systems in place report a higher error reduction from bar code usage.
