Chennai , June 11 VENOCUFF, a cure for vein-related problems, was introduced recently in India. It has been used to treat varicose veins, and its advocates claim that overseas data showed it was less expensive than alternatives. At a press conferenceon Friday, its inventor, Dr Rodney J. Lane, and the product's distributors made a visual presentation of the way Venocuff is used. An Australian company Coefficient Systems has brought Venocuff to India, and the Chennai-based Iconet Patient Care would handle the Indian distribution. At the conference, Dr S.R. Subramaniyan, Chief Vascular Surgeon, Vijaya Hospital, said Venocuff was more effective than alternatives for treating varicose veins. He said that a popular alternative, surgical stripping, involved removing the affected vein. In contrast, Venocuff helped preserve the vein by surgically placing a silicone band around malfunctioning vein valve to tighten and restore it. Dr Subramaniyan estimated that using Venocuff would cost around Rs 25,000 (including the cost of Venocuff). An alternative, surgical stripping costs Rs 15,000-20,000. Dr Lane claimed that data collected overseas showed that Venocuff was more cost-effective in the long-run because it reduced the possibility of recurrence of the problem. Varicose veins occur when the valves that prevent blood flowing in the wrong direction begin to malfunction. Dr Subramaniyan estimated that 20-25 per cent of Indians suffer the problem. Though varicose veins do not immediately lead to a crisis, over time they may lead to other complications, said Dr Subramaniyan.
