THE Chief Commissioner of Customs, Kolkata, Mr Subrata Basu, stressed upon the need for synchronisation of the operations of the customs department, port authorities, shipping lines and allied agencies to facilitate smooth imports and exports.
Speaking at an interactive session with the members of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce here today, Mr Basu said that timely movement of goods was a prime requirement but it was not the responsibility of the customs department alone. Companies, too, should be professional and employ skilled labour for speedy clearance of goods.
Mr Basu said the response to e-filing of customs returns was poor and urged companies to use computers. He said some companies tried to take undue advantage of customs rules and, thereby, made matters more complicated for themselves.
"Ethics in business is the most important thing," he said.
In his address, Mr A.K. Das, Commissioner of Customs (Port), said the customs department couldn't become efficient in its operations in isolation. It needs the support of allied departments as well. He also said the customs department was gradually getting used to playing the role of a trade facilitator.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Mr N.K. Rajgharia, a former President of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, spoke about delays in clearances, its drawbacks, test reports and appraisal by customs in the docks. He said poor infrastructure and inadequate land customs stations at places such as Petrapole, Hilli and Ranaghat hindered exports to Bangladesh.
