YSR stresses on need for affordable medicare for poor in AP

DR Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, has asked the medical community and other stakeholders to join hands to offer affordable medicare to the poor.

Delivering the inaugural address at the two-day ninth annual conference of Cardiological Society of India (CSI-Andhra Pradesh) here on Saturday, he said medicare and medical education should be made affordable for common man.

Referring to a recent meeting with representatives of private medical college managements, he said they had agreed to reduce the fee for 50 per cent of the 1,600 students studying in their colleges.

Dr R. Prasad Reddy, President of CSI (Hyderabad), asked the Chief Minister to look at `Yashaswini', a health initiative launched by the Karnataka Government, to care of the health needs of the poor.

He said 30 lakh people died of cardiac problems every year.

Stating that the problem was growing by the day, he said 10 per cent of urbanites and 6 per cent of the people in rural areas were suffering from cardiac problems.
