Parth Sanyal

About 300 sex workers of Sonagachi queueing up before a counter to open their bank accounts while being helped by an officer at the State Bank of India's Jorasanko branch in Kolkata on Sunday. The country's largest bank is targeting sex workers as a potential client base in this special deposit mobilisation programme. Sonagachi is one of the largest red light areas in Asia and some 30,000 sex workers operate from here. SBI will also rope in other red light areas of metro cities. A few norms have been relaxed for these depositors i.e. proof of identity and a cheque facility for a deposit Rs 250 instead of the normal Rs 500.
