Telecommunications Marketing - Market Shares LG eyes larger GSM pie V. Rishi Kumar
Hyderabad , June 14 THE GSM arm of the Korean major, LG Electronics, is bullish on the growing Indian telecom market. It expects to garner a 20 per cent market share by next year from the present 6 per cent riding on the launch of a range of mobile handsets, mostly colour ones, partnering with operators to bundle them with services and expanding the LGP (LG partners) from 150 currently to 400 by the year-end. The Product Group Head, Mobile Phones, LG Electronics, Mr Praveen Valecha, told Business Line that the company, although a late comer in the GSM market, was emerging as a force with its range of versatile handsets. The company has sold about 1,00,000 handsets in the first five months this year and expects to triple this by the year-end. "Currently, LG has a product line-up of six models in the GSM space, which are imported from Korea in the completely built unit form, with the price ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 24,000. The colour phone segment will be the key focus area in 2004. With the launch of six more phones in the next two-three months, all of them colour ones, we will be able to further consolidate our presence in the market," he said.
"The mobile handset market is shifting towards the coloured phone segment and most players are set to focus here. Our punch line is `Lets Talk Colour'," he said. "We introduced GSM handsets in October last year in the Indian market and expect to clock revenues of Rs 300 crore this year".
