Star to distribute UHE's proposed kids' channel Hungama TV

Mumbai , June 14

UNITED Home Entertainment (UHE) on Monday signed an MoU with Star India Pvt Ltd to distribute the former's proposed television channel for children, Hungama TV.

UHE was jointly floated by UTV and Mr Ronnie Screwvala, CEO - UTV, to roll out the channel, which entails an investment of Rs 100 crore. Hungama TV aims to be the country's first 24-hour Hindi channel dedicated to the viewing of children in the age group of 4-15 years.

Star's distribution network reaches over 30 million Indian homes.

At a press briefing, Mr Screwvala pointed out that the segment Hungama TV sought to service was that of "original Hindi live action'', very different from the animation space already catered to by leading global content libraries. The new channel intends to have a panel of children to approve its programming.

Mr Sameer Nair, Chief Operating Officer, Star India, said taking Hungama TV aboard was logical for Star given the absence of a children's channel in its Indian bouquet. On the other hand, the few hours of kids programming it has already gives Star a lead over competition in that genre, he said.
