Our Bureau

Madurai , June 15

THE Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association (TFMA) has stressed on the laying of a double line between Chennai and Madurai, to be extended up to Kanyakumari in course of time, in a pre-budget memorandum to the Union Minister of Railways Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav.

TFMA has also suggested the introduction of a high speed `Jan Shatabdi' express between the cities to meet the growing flow of traffic.

Some of the other demands include increased allocation of funds for completing the broad gauge projects in the State, extension of train services from the north such as Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad Express up to Madurai, a direct train between Madurai and Tirupati, linkage to Goa from the south to derive the benefits of the Konkan project, a luxury train similar to the `Palace on Wheels' connecting Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari to promote tourism.
