Review food adulteration Act: Chamber

Our Correspondent

Madurai , June 15

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCCI) has called for the incorporation of the principle of `Mens Rea' in the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act so that traders are not wrongly punished.

In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss , TNCCI has said that there are a number of flaws in the PFA Act; including the rules and the implementation strategy. The aim of the Act is to prevent food adulteration.

While the menace of adulteration should be curbed at the source itself, there is no use in punishing traders . Proper inquiry should be made and the real culprit should be punished, it has demanded.

TNCCI has further said that the word `adulteration' has not been properly defined in the Act as substandard is equated with adulteration.
