Paswan promises revival of SAIL's alloy steel plant

THE Union Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilisers, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, on Tuesday said that all efforts would be made to revive SAIL's alloy steel plant (ASP), adding that there would neither be disinvestment nor closure of the plant, according to an official release.
The Minister said that while Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) has revived and made a profit of about Rs 81crore, ASP has made a loss of Rs 172 crore in the last fiscal.
He said that schemes worth Rs 40 crore would be implemented in ASP for various technological improvements and efforts would be made to see that similar schemes that will give adequate returns would also be considered to make ASP profitable.
Mr Paswan also said that shortage of coking coal has to be dealt with introduction of new technologies like coal dust injection and tar injection.
The Minister added that he would be shortly talking to the Coal Ministry for increasing the availability of indigenous coking coal.
He has also asked SAIL to look for the possibility of joint mining ventures abroad.
Mr Paswan also announced that a reward of Rs 1,000 each would be given to all SAIL employees for record-breaking performance in the last fiscal. He plans to visit IISCO shortly to assess the situation.
