Airlines Cabinet okays changes in Bangalore airport agreement Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 15 THE Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the language-related modifications proposed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in the `Concession Agreement' to be signed by the Bangalore International Authority Ltd (BIAL) and the Government. Sources said that among the changes approved include an assurance that the Government will ensure that the existing airport shall not be opened or made available for commercial civil aviation operations. Besides, the Government shall use its "good offices" and "assist'' BIAL for the grant of an airport licence from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). At a meeting held on January 20 this year, the Cabinet had approved the draft concession agreement to be signed between BIAL and the Government for the setting up of the greenfield airport project at Devenahalli in Bangalore. Earlier, the draft concession agreement was evolved by a working group constituted by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), with representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Department of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Airports Authority of India, and the Government of Karnataka. The draft concession agreement was later examined by the Ministries of Finance and Law, which suggested some changes. However, both BIAL and the Karnataka Government had differences, which were examined by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and language modifications were proposed and sent to the Ministries of Finance and Law. These changes were approved today, an official statement here pointed out.
