Centre's help sought to better Coimbatore roads

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , June 17

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Coimbatore, has sought the intervention of the Centre to improve the city's road infrastructure.

It also sought improvement to roads linking the hosiery town of Tirupur with the port cities of Kochi, Thoothukudi and Chennai so that export cargoes could be moved faster.

The ICCI President, Mr A. Sakthivel, who participated in the interaction the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, had with the members of the trade here, said the Minister had assured formation of a bye-pass road linking Coimbatore-Mettupalayam and Coimbatore-Salem roads which would help ease congestion in the city's roads.

In a memorandum presented to the Minister, he pointed out that due to lack of coordination between the Centre and the State Governments, road development project proposals were delayed due to lack of financial sanction from the Centre and delay in land acquisition by the State. He said though cities smaller than Coimbatore like Tiruchi, Salem and Thanjavur have ring roads, Coimbatore was yet to be provided with this facility and wanted top priority be given to Peelamedu- Saravanampatti-Tudialur- Perur- Kurichi- Podanur- Vellalore-Singanallur-Peelamedu ring road formation.

Mr Sakthivel wanted that the Coimbatore-Salem National Highway be linked with the proposed Coimbatore-Mettupalayam National Highway and the Coimbatore-Kochi National Highway, which would help motorists going to/coming from Mettupalayam to skip entering Coimbatore.

Mr Sakthivel, who is also the President of Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA), urged the Minister to improve the roads linking Tirupur with Avanashi, Palladam and Perumanallur.

He said the Minister had also assured that he would do the needful for widening the railway over-bridge near Coimbatore Medical College.
