Sand price cut in TN

THE Tamil Nadu Government has slashed the ex-depot price of sand in a bid to rein in construction cost, according to an official press release.
A lorry load of sand will cost Rs 600 from June 19, down from the prevailing Rs 1,000. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting here on Thursday.
The State Government took over sand quarrying from private players in October 2003 to prevent indiscriminate quarrying of sand from the riverbeds. The Public Works Department was entrusted with the job of quarrying the sand and selling it to private operators.
The Government also decided that school students would no longer be detained between classes 1 and five.
To prevent drop outs and encourage children to study, it decided that students in government schools and government-aided schools will automatically be promoted every year up to the fifth class provided they have a 75 per cent attendance in class. This will come into effect from the current academic year, the release said.
