ER records higher freight earnings in April-May

IN the first two months of the current fiscal, Eastern Railway transported 6.918 million tonnes of freight, mostly coal (4.977 mt), surpassing the target of 5.970 mt fixed for the period by the Railway Board and recording a significant improvement over 5.517 mt handled in the same period of the 2003, according to ER sources.

The earning from the freight traffic jumped to Rs 164.15 crore from Rs 99.83 crore earned in the same period of the last year.

During the period, ER carried 11.7 crore passengers - 10.07 crore suburban passengers and 1.63 crore non-suburban passengers - compared with 11.04 crore in the same period of last year. The earning from the passenger traffic too increased to Rs 144.38 crore (Rs 135.73 crore).

ER's total earning during the period increased to Rs 345.48 crore, surpassing the proportionate target of Rs 313.29 crore fixed for the period by the Railway Board and Rs 238.57 crore earned during the same period of the last year.
