Chamber urges options to uplift socially deprived

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Coimbatore, has asked the Centre to look for options to improve the conditions of SC/STs, other than job reservation in the private sector.
It said better access to education, employment opportunities and a social safety net were needed to uplift the socially deprived.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the ICCI President Mr A. Sakthivel, said the representatives of trade and industry and the professional bodies of the region had discussed the reservation issue in the Common Minimum Programme., Political parties might recommend privatisation to gain popularity but it was against the "logic of economic efficiency and is clearly undesirable".
Hiring should be based only on the suitability of the candidate for the job than any other consideration. This was true for both the private sector and the public sector and "job reservation, whether in the private or public sector, introduces additional market distortions and leads to sub-optimal outcomes, and is thus undesirable", he argued.
Mr Sakthivel said the private sector had an important role in uplifting the deprived classes - by providing education and setting up SSI units for SCs/STs.
The Government should "concentrate on creating conditions that would allow the private sector to function in an efficient manner and not create distortions in the name of correcting other discrepancies".
