Indian trade fair in Colombo to focus on bilateral trade

Chennai , June 19

THE Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) in collaboration with Kontak Exhibition & Fairs is organising `Indian Trade Fair 2004' from October 13 to 17 in Colombo.

Ms Shanti Outschroon, General Manager, SLECC, said that Sri Lanka does not produce much, and most of the raw materials and finished products are imported from India or other countries. India is one of the largest exporters to Sri Lanka, she said. Official figures show that Sri Lanka's bilateral trade with India has been growing since the Free Trade Agreement in 1998. In 2003, Indian exports to Sri Lanka were over $1 billion up from $ 831 million in 2002.

Mr V Raman, CEO, Kontak Exhibitions & Fairs, said that the trade fair would bring into focus on trade opportunities between India and Sri Lanka. Last year the exhibition had 100 stalls, and this year, SLECC estimates that around 200 exhibitors from India will participate.

Mr Raman said that help would be given to exhibitors for travel and accommodation, design and construction of special stalls, co-ordination with freight forwarders for packaging and shipping exhibits, on-site administration and hiring audio visual equipment.
