Better compliance with port security norms

THERE is a rising trend in compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

The latest figures released by the International Maritime Organisation show that the total number of International Ship Security Certificates (ISSC) issued by governments worldwide reached 4,841, up 22.7 per cent from 9.2 per cent in May.

The number of Port Facility Security Plans approved by governments totalled 654, or 10.7 per cent, up from 5.4 per cent recorded last month. The situation is improving and efforts are continuing by governments and industry to ensure that the regulatory regime adopted by the IMO in December 2002 is in place by the July 1, 2004 deadline, there is still a lot of work to be done.

The IMO has, therefore, renewed its appeal to all concerned to redouble their efforts to implement the new security measures as early as possible.
