Tea volumes cross 5-lakh kg mark at Coimbatore sale

Coimbatore , June 20

THE total offering at the Coimbatore tea auction crossed the 5.10-lakh kg mark on Friday, with the quantities in the electronic auction swelling to 81,873 kg and on the conventional platform 4.38- lakh kg.

Of the 81,873 kg on offer on e-auction, 70 lots comprising 26,212 kg were of the dust category and the balance of the leaf. Sixty per cent of the offered quantity of dust was sold at an average rate of Rs 43.24 a kg, while the leaf was quoting at an average price of Rs 40.19 a kg. The rates quoted this week (sale no 25) were lower than the last week rates.

The conventional method of trading followed, when the orthodox leaf met with export demand and the prices firmed up by Rs 2 to Rs 3 a kg for high grown whole leaf and brokens. Good liquoring CTC leaf teas ruled firm to dearer by Rs 2 a kg.
