Hutchison Tele East to invest Rs 900 cr in infrastructure

The company has firmed up plans to roll out its cellular services in the West Bengal Telecom Circle just before the pujas this year.

HUTCHISON Telecom East Ltd plans to invest Rs 900 crore in infrastructure creation in West Bengal for five years. In the year ending March 2005, Rs 120 crore will be invested in the West Bengal Telecom Circle.

A few months ago, the company acquired the licence to roll out cellular services in the West Bengal Telecom Circle. Existing players in the arena include Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Reliance Infocom.

Talking to Business Line, Mr Sunil Sood, CEO, Hutchison Telecom East Ltd, said the company has firmed up plans to roll out its cellular services in the West Bengal Telecom Circle just before the pujas this year. Emphasis will be laid on building up user bases in moffusil towns, talukas and in rural West Bengal.

In Kolkata, Hutchison Telecom East is the largest mobile services provider with a user base of 5.5 lakh. As part of its efforts to build the Hutch brand, the company on Monday announced the dates for Odeon 2004, its annual theatre festival. Odeon, which begins on June 24, will continue for two weeks and will feature a seminar, two Bengali plays and one play in Hindi and English each.
